4.5 stars…I enjoyed this hurt/comfort themed suspense book. But rather than a romance novel this is the hurt/comfort trope between the MC and a trained K9 who loses his partner/handler. I just loved the dynamic between the two and I loved the way the relationship plays out and the symbiotic relationship.The crime elements of the book were obvious to me from the beginning. It did not dampen my enjoyment of the book as I enjoyed watching how it all unfolded. The final crisis moment (there are several!) was tense and so satisfying to me. (But I’m kind of bloodthirsty towards the villains!)It was a bit slow moving at the start and I wasn’t sure I was going to like Maddie. But as the story progressed and the character development kicked in I began to like her more and more. Now I am really looking forward to the next book in the series! I found much of the focus on addiction and physical therapy to be detracting and without the feeling of accuracy.Maddie leaves Ox (who betrayed her), to live a considerable distance away, in the trailer park she knew as a child, with her stereotypical junkie mom, and then her childhood best friend (handsome widower with adorable child), moves in next door.Felt too much like a romance novel.There were grammatical errors that were repeated, of a simple nature that shouldn't have been made missed.It just wasn't L.T. After the first several chapters, the plot and side stories come together to make for an in story. This book has a good, convoluted story. It makes me think and I love that. It took the whole book for me to finally see who the bad guy really was.
