When I first heard the title 'Unfollow Your Passion,' I was curious as to how such a premise would unfold. But it wasn’t until it was highly recommended by someone I respected, that I decided to take a listen. I find that when an author reads her own work it adds a dimension of authenticity that enhances the content if the narration is in alignment with good writing. I was pleasantly surprised to find a synergy of fun wisdom and power that left me with many gifts. Not the least of which is a new affection for this writer, who so endeared me to her with the sheer fun and organic wit and wisdom she brings to the written word. She unpacks her beliefs and concepts deftly, through sweet stories, and as lovingly as from a suitcase placed on the bed of a well needed vacation spot. I didn’t think I had anything to learn about my longings and passions, as they are alive and well within me, with lots of well beaten baths for their expressions. So I was pleasantly surprised to experience a truly fresh reframing of so much about how to live our best life. I want to hear more, I want her as a sister, and I hope this review inspires others to come away with at least as much as I did, having experienced Terri! This is the kind of book I want to share and gift my loved ones, up there with the likes of Glennon Doyle, Cheryl Strayed and Elizabeth Lesser, to name a few. Ever since graduating from college, I’ve bought and read books about how to "find" my passion, as if it were something cleverly hidden beneath a rock somewhere. Finally!! A book for the rest of us who've experienced that left-out feeling of not having unearthed the "ONE" thing that defines you and your purpose in life.Don't get me wrong, Terri isn't a life coach and doesn't claim to be. She's a fellow traveler in this life with astute observations on those "truisms" we’ve been told "should" guide us in what we do with this one precious life we’ve been given. Told through often-hilarious real-life stories, Terri’s message profoundly resonated with me.The road to self-discovery is significantly more complicated and gratifying than the dogged search for a single "passion." Terri has a lot of good, sound advice for everyone to snap them back into reality and to recognize just how the world really works.However, I found her to be too liberal with the anti-male/patriarchy jabs. I realized, after a bit, her audience was more for women than a general audience, which I thought was disappointing considering what she has to offer here is good for everyone regardless of gender. As a husband to a college professor, I understand women still have struggles in the workforce and I'm just as irritated about it as anyone else. But Terri's near-constant use of anti-male points began to irritate me. I came to this book looking for good advice (I did get that) but left annoyed and wishing she could've saved her anti-male rhetoric for a different book.It's still a solid book, but for any men looking to read this, be forewarned.If Terri, by an chance, happens to read this review, please don't do this in future books unless your book is specifically marketed towards women. This book was marketed toward a broader audience and I didn't appreciate the jabs. There are many of us men who are feminists and want to work with you in changing that. But you alienate your support when you add a number of general anti-male points in a book in which they don't belong. And—that is saying a lot coming from someone who has not only read all the books, and “knows” enough that is often sought out for insights and wisdom!What Terri does so well in her book, is not just list out the thing to do differently, but she does a great job intertwining her own journey/s into how the often well known beliefs really just don’t hold up! And her stories go beyond the anecdotal. The reader gets a full run down on how many of the traditional self-growth/development strategies really just don’t make sense, while providing you with an alternative way to look at it.If you are someone who knows that it’s time to shift things up in your life, but not really sure how; and you’re tired of listening to conventional ideas that just really haven’t worked for you—you gotta read this book! Not only will it make you think, but the flow is easy to read so you can finish it quickly, and—better yet- you can get right to work doing the mini-worksheets she includes at the end of each chapter! So go unfollow your passion, and really find out how to bring yourself to life!
